The green shrubbery shudders playfully in the wind behind him. His medium-length blue and black dreads hang down over his forehead just as his icey “Dexter” chain hangs carelessly off his neck. He kicks back, beaming positively and occasionally putting his feet up to allow his flashy, mango-coloured sweatpants with a double black stripe down the sides to steal the show.
Famous Dex has been a brewing storm, carefully fermenting and preparing to ravage any land in its wake, and things only seem to be looking up. A careful student of the game, Dex is on a new wave of hip hop and the excitement of fresh innovation keeps him enlightened.
“Everybody got their own sound!” he says, his eyes lighting up with the enthusiasm of a young child. “I love this hip hop music stuff right now, it’s so cool. It’s beautiful. On top of that, Jay-Z come back with the 4:44 album… my whole life is still his whole album. Me? I’m gon’ make you move…but Jay-Z gon’ give you a story. That’s a legend. If you wanna hear real music, go listen to 4:44, DAMN or Nas. That’s music, that’s real music. What we do is entertainment, just havin’ fun.”
Without a doubt the Chicago, Illinois rapper has a deep respect for the torch-bearers that built a foundation for the craft he cherishes so much. It’s because of them he’s able to find success at heights that rappers only decades ago could have dreamed of.
“There wouldn’t be no Dex if there wasn’t no Nas!” he exclaims. “If you don’t respect the OGs then fuck you. You gotta respect Snoop, Ice Cube… the Wu-Tang, Redman and Method Man, you gotta respect em!”
Just as those artists have influenced him, Dex is acutely aware of the effect his influence has on others. He’s sure to keep a positive mindset, and focus not only on his future, but the way in which he influences his fans in building their own. “Stay humble, stay who you are,” he says. “Never, never let this internet destroy you cause it will take advantage of people nowadays. Lean, Xans, it’s a trend. The message to the youth is: don’t let that trend destroy your dreams… Take care of yourself first, and your family. Believe in yourself and you’ll go a long way.”
