With his blonde and black mini-dreads hanging casually atop his head, Smokepurpp has one of those unique physical auras that’s hard to define. It’s as if his appearance is a perfect representation of who he is inside.
Hailing from Miami, Florida, the young rapper has been making waves across the scene alongside artists like Lil Pump and more. The SoundCloud wave was one that Purpp rode to the fullest, and the tactical moves he made after blowing up were ones the cemented a newfound path into the industry. But that’s not where it all started.
"50 Cent was my favorite rapper growing up, I bought every album,” he says. “Even if I saw a bootleg album I bought that sh*t. He brought a lot of gangsta to the game. When his movie came out, his movie was crazy as f*uck, that movie should have got an Oscar. It's 50, he's a legend.”
With the respect he has for OGs, Smokepurpp has also understands the ways trends change and innovate. His art is a part of that new wave which is taking over the industry.
"The OGs that are around right now don't sound like the OGs that were around before them. We don't sound like our OGs and when we're the OGs, the younger people are not going to sound like us. Music is art, there's no specific way to make art, you could do what you want, you could grab a mic and fart on that sh*t and go viral. If we want to mumble rap, we can mumble rap.”
There’s really no doubt that Purpp is speaking truth, maybe one day when he’s an OG to the young ones coming up, he’ll be a little easier on them than the OGs today are on him.
